Well, here we are at that special time of the year with springtime in the air, summer's radiance already more than a glimmer in the eye and, yes, you guessed it, the fresh crop of pink (or, should you prefer, rosé) wines beginning to make their annual and oh so welcome appearance here. Check out the cool, refreshing and delicious selections at the pink page of our web-site. Then scurry on downtown and pick up the pink! |
The state trees of Texas are budding out. The |
And then, from among recent arrivals, splendid values and otherwise special deals:
2011 Domaine de Fontsainte Corbières Rosé Gris de Gris
As was also the case last year, this is the first of the new crop of northern hemisphere rosé wines to make its way here this year. Déja vu? We're down with that. Once again, a gorgeous translucent apricot to peach skin-pink in color; oh, it's fresh, ultra-fresh and cool on the nose, like vines in flower, previewing spring itself with just-fermented aromas suggesting cool of the morning baskets of freshly-picked ripe fruit basking on cool morning dew-moist limestone and just giddy with anticipation at being magically transformed into pink wine; ultra-light on its feet, ultra-refreshing on the tongue with just a kiss of ultra-fresh crisp berry flavor. Oh yeah, we're in the pink!

2010 Chablis Vieilles Vignes Gérard TREMBLAY
Produce of 100% Chardonnay fruit hand-picked mostly from 50-plus year-old vines from one sustainably-farmed vineyard near Poinchy. This is like springtime for lovers of real Chablis: characteristic luminous green-gold in color with ultra clean, pure aromas suggesting ripe cool-of-the-morning Chardonnay berries over rain-soaked stone; supremely balanced and deliciously dry, with a certain urgency and lovely interplay between ripe fruit from old vines, minerality and vibrant acidity; this is just plain delightful in this very here and now ...

Marietta Cellars Old Vine Red Lot Number 56
Produced from Zinfandel, Petite Sirah and Carignane primarily from vineyards in Sonoma and Mendocino counties, Marietta Cellars Old Vine Red replicates the old Cal‑Ital field blends there. Characteristically deep ruby in color with forward Zin aromas suggesting blackberry and spiced plum; at once balanced and generous, lush and supple on the tongue with a nicely rounded and mouth‑filling finish — the same up‑front and delicious wine we've come to know and love over these last fifty‑something lots. And, true as its ever‑blue label, Marietta Cellars Old Vine Red remains steadfast in its value.

2009 Bourgogne Chardonnay Réserve BOUCHARD Père et Fils
Settled in the heart of the Côte de Beaune since 1731, Bouchard Père et Fils know well the qualities of the terroirs of this southern section of the Côte d'Or. For their Bourgogne Blanc Réserve, they have selected fine Chardonnay fruit from various parcels of vineyard for their complementary qualities. The result is a delicious if less expensive white Burgundy that would serve as a worthy entrée to the far more expensive white wines from the Côte de Beaune. Pale yellow gold in color with aromas of citrus and stone and a subtle toast from oak; at once smooth and round and crisp and compelling on the tongue with a fine delicate flavor, and a freshness and a satisfyingness that play ever so well together. Absolutely delicious!

2009 Bourgogne Pinot Noir Réserve Bouchard Père et Fils
A harbinger of the good things to come with the 2009 vintage in Burgundy? Bouchard Père et Fils 2009 vintage Bourgogne Pinot Noir Réserve is clearly a more well-endowed vin regionale than may be typical: dark cherry-skin red in color with aromas suggestive of cranberry, black cherry, baking spices and earth; at once supple, delicate and crisp, but engaging, challenging and just warm with ample weight and body and that telltale mouthwatering Burgundian acidity keeping things fresh to the finish. Will this impress on the level of, say, your every day Grand Cru Chambertin? Not likely. But for those who truly love Burgundy, this is a most impressive, if not every day, perhaps every other day red Burgundy.

2009 Côte de Beaune DROUHIN
A very fresh red pinot fruit nose is nuanced by floral and spice hints as well as a touch of the sauvage that can also be found on the lightly mineral-suffused middle weight flavors that possess fine complexity on the slightly firmer finish. Lovely and worth a look. Rated 89. ‑ Allen Meadows, burghound.com

2009 Dogliani Vigna Tecc Einaudi
"Dogliani" is a new DOCG which denotes highest quality wines produced from Dolcetto grapes in this cooler, higher elevation growing area in this southern part of Piemonte. Pronounced "TETCH" as in 'Einaudi have the touch' with Dolcetto. Produced from 100% Dolcetto fruit from select marl/calcareous and clay soils from 2 hectares of favored old hillside vineyards on the estate near the village of Dogliani, Einaudi Vigna Tecc Dogliani is a Dolcetto of superb concentration and breed: deep ruby in color with glimmers of violet; suggestive aromas of fleshy berry fruit, underbrush, Alpine-informed Piemontese soils, truffle and liquirizia; ample, almost richly textured on the tongue, with gentle rounded tannins and tantalizing and intense berry fruit flavors and that telltale hint of bitter almond stretching out long on the finish. La Dolcetto Vita, indeed!
