The Loire river flows some thousand miles from its source in springs on Mont Gerbier de Jonc in the Ardèche, northward through through Orléans, then westward across the center of France through Tours and on to the Atlantic Ocean. The Loire Valley is known as the garden of France and is home to some of the most prized of vineyards on the planet for Sauvignon Blanc and Chenin Blanc, then closer to the Atlantic, the Melon de Bourgogne of Muscadet.

2009 Sancerre Gérard FIOU 2009 Sancerre Gérard FIOU
Produce from average 60 year-old old Sauvignon vines planted on the flint-rich hills of Saint-Satur on the the eastern side of the appellation of Sancerre. Vinified in temperature-controlled stainless steel, maturing on its fine lees with regular batonnage for more than 6 months. For our money, the 2009 vintage in the Loire Valley, like much of the rest of the European vineyard, offers a veritable embarassment of riches wine-wise. A quick whiff of this superb 2009 Sancerre Gérard Fiou and you can just smell the refreshment in store: inviting aromas that would remind this Texan taster of a perfectly ripe ruby-red grapegfruit and, perhaps, yes, gooseberry, on a backdrop of fresh spring rain-drenched stone; plump and round and ripe on the tongue with ample brisk and uplifting fruity acidity in a supporting role and classic flavors of perfectly ripe Sauvignon Blanc grown in one of its happiest of places.
