Offering of 2011 Vintage White Wines of Château de La Maltroye

Jean-Pierre Cournut says the "quality of 2011 is not far from that of the 2010 vintage. The growing season was up and down but so was that of the prior vintage and it's evident how good those wines are so while I'm not prepared to say that the growing season doesn't matter anymore, it's clear that we've gotten better at our viticulture. We began picking on the 1st of September for both the chardonnay and the pinot noir and while the fruit wasn't perfect there really wasn't all that much sorting necessary. Potential alcohols for the chardonnay was between 12.2 and 13.1% and I did my normal vinification and did absolutely no lees stirring at all as the wines seemed to have more than enough richness. The 2011s are better than people believe and there many even be a few that rival their 2010 counterparts." I have mentioned this before but it's worth repeating that the wines here have become ever purer and as Cournut has done in the last several vintages, he has definitely outperformed in 2011 relative to the general quality I saw in Chassagne. Cournut noted that the whites were bottled in September, 2012. ‑ burghound.com Issue 51, Third Quarter, 2013

Tasting Notes from Allen Meadows' burghound.com

2011 Chassagne-Montrachet Château de La Maltroye
A pungent and expressive nose features notes of fennel, citrus peel and spiced pear. There is excellent volume and vibrancy to the textured, intense and solidly powerful middle weight flavors that offer much better than average depth and length for a villages level Chassagne. Drink: 2016+. Rated 89. Outstanding! Top Value!

2011 Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Grandes Ruchottes
A deft touch of wood frames the ever-so-mildly exotic fruit aromas that include peach, dried apricot, spice and freshly grated lemon zest. There is excellent concentration and an abundance of dry extract that coats the palate on the powerful yet refined finish that displays very fine balance. Thanks to the richness of the extract, this will be approachable young but there is so much potential I would advise waiting if you can. Drink: 2019+. Rated 92. Outstanding!

2011 Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru La Romanée Château de La Maltroye
Note: there is almost no topsoil in this particular parcel and the vines grow into fragmented, heavily fissured rock. An overtly exotic nose is comprised of highly spiced tea, various dried yellow orchard fruit scents and floral nuances. There is a simply amazing amount of concentration to the middle weight plus flavors that seem to possess a limitless amount of dry extract that imparts a succulent, even opulent mouth feel to the almost painfully intense finish that just goes on and on. This is a stunning and very powerful Chassagne 1er and well worth your attention. Drink: 2019+. Rated 94. Don't miss! Outstanding!

2011 Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru La Dent de Chien Château de La Maltroye
Note: from vines planted in 1935. A ripe yet cool and wonderfully complex nose offers a broad range of aromas that include citrus and ever-so-mildly exotic yellow fruit along with background nuances of anise, clove, spiced tea and menthol. The intense, dense and focused medium-bodied flavors also brim with a remarkable level of dry extract that buffers the firm acid spine on the explosive and lemon-infused finish where the almost pungent minerality adds additional lift. This is also a remarkable effort and it might catch the La Romanée in time. Drink: 2019+. Rated 93. Sweet spot! Outstanding!

2011 Bâtard-Montrachet Château de La Maltroye
Here the strikingly complex nose is much more restrained with its elegant array of white flowers, apple, pear, lemon and spice elements. There is superb concentration to the big, weighty and powerful flavors that, almost incongruously, possess a lilting palate impression before terminating in a driving and positively bone dry finish. This is distinctly tight and backwards and unlike some of its stable mates in 2011 will probably not drink well young as this will require a minimum of 5 to 6 years of bottle age to flesh out as the finish is decidedly linear at present. Drink: 2021+. Rated 95. Don't miss!
