Hungary’s claim to fame in the world of wine is Tokaji Aszú – the first wine to purposefully be made from nobly rotten grapes, famously prized and enjoyed by high potentates of old for its magical, curative powers. And, the quality of Tokaji Aszú may never have been higher than it is in these modern times.

2013 Tokaji Aszú Royal Tokaji 6 Puttonyos Single Vineyard Betsek

Like the other 2013 Aszú wines, this has been aged for 30 months in 300-litre oak barrels, as the winemakers don't seek any overt oak influence. At this stage Betsek is more open on the nose, with reticent apple and apricot aromas. The attack is fresh, silky and sweet, but the fruit is concentrated, precise, and poised. The finish is lively and quite long. Drink: 2020-2038. Rated 92. - Stephen Brook,
