2015 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Grosso Sanese Podere Il Palazzino

2015 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Grosso Sanese Podere Il Palazzino

Podere Il Palazzino is owned by Alessandro and Andrea Sderci and is located in Monti in Chianti, 20km northeast of Siena in the southern part of Chianti Classico. The estate has a total of about 20 hectares (roughly 50 acres), the greater part of which is dedicated to viticulture and a small part to olive groves. Given the small dimensions of the estate working procedures are strictly manual and the soil is cultivated using organic methods. Grosso Sanese originates from a vineyard covering about 2 hectares just below the casa and cantina of the estate. The fairly compact clay/calcareous soils here are composed mainly of alberese and galestro. The vines are pruned in the spurred cordon method, leaving a maximum of six buds per plant. Production is limited to 5,000 to 6,000 litres per hectare for a total production of about 10,000 bottles per year. Fermentation takes place in 5,000-liter oak barrels. The wine is refined in barriques made of Alliers oak, thirty percent of which are replaced each year. Here it stays for eighteen months, before the final blending and bottling. The wine then ages for another six months in bottle before being released for sale. These are among the last remnants of la vendemmia solare from Italia here (Grosso Sanese is a late‑release Chianti Classico, now (rightly) classified as a Gran Selezione). Produce of 100% Sangiovese, deep, deep ruby in color; formidable from the get go with a seeming wall of aromatic power forcefully suggesting leather, the scent of fine cured meats, sanguine and gamy, with further suggestion of teaberry, rose petal, liquirizia and the baking summertime soils of alberese and galestro (Henry noted dark, intense black cherry fruit and a sense of sotto bosco and porcini mushrooms); the 2015 vintage in evidence on entry, gripping, potent, warming, with firm stony Sangiovese tannins giving structure and heft, savory and long on flavor to the finish. Steak florentine, perhaps? Sì, sì, sì …

2019 Greco di Tufo Nova Serra Mastroberardino

2019 Greco di Tufo Nova Serra Mastroberardino

The Mastroberardino family, leaders in Italian viticulture, are largely responsible for the revival and elevation of Irpinian and Campanian winemaking post WWII. Their efforts ignited a resurgence in quality red and white wine production in all of southern Italy. Working primarily with Campania’s ancient native varietals Fiano, Greco and Aglianico, Mastroberardino has resuscitated would-be extinct wine grapes into world class varieties. The ancient Greco Bianco grape, of which Greco is a clone, was brought to the province of Avellino dai Pelagi in Campania from Thessaly in Greece in the first century BC. Perhaps the most prestigious clone, Greco di Tufo, is named after the town of Tufo in Avellino, where the grape thrives. Tufo refers to the soft, volcanic rock that makes up the subsoil of the region and which imparts a distinctive minerality to the wine. Matroberardino Nova Serra is produce of 100% Greco di Tufo fruit hand-harvested from espalier-trained vines planted to predominantly clay-limestone soils with southeast exposures at elevations of about 450 metres at the Tufo and Petruro Irpino estates. The wine undergoes classic white wine vinification in stainless steel tanks at controlled (read cool) temperatures. Vivid platinum yellow in color with stone-influenced aromas from the start, a kind of rainsoaked chalky limestone, a fleeting fresh herbal quality like chervil or fennel fronds, and then a touch of apricot with air (but, really, it's all about the stone); quite firm on the palate, notable scale and richness but without excess weight and, at once, a delicate if intense minerality that bursts into being on the tongue and stirs the salivary glands in a flourish on the finish. Vino bianco eccezionale!

2015 Toscana Montebello Badia a Coltibuono

2015 Toscana Montebello Badia a Coltibuono

Produce of nine historical grape varieties, namely, Mammolo, Ciliegiolo, Pugnitello, Colorino, Sanforte, Malvasia Nera, Canaiolo, Fogliatonda and, of course, Sangiovese from vines now 20 to 30 years in age and planted to the clay/limestone soils of Monti in Chianti with brilliant exposures on the hill of Montebello. The fruit is hand-picked and sorted at the winery set in the heart of the vineyards. Each variety is then vinified and aged separately in 500-litre open-top barrels utilizing indigenous yeasts and natural fermentations. Medium ruby to garnet at the edges in color, with utterly enticing aromas that just sing Toscana, sanguine Sangiovese, the perfectly singed crust of bistecca alla fiorentina, the patina of the annata solare of 2015, tanned leather, sun‑roasted herb (Henry noted sage and bay leaf), or is it just the macchia mediterranea itself (all these bits left to the imagination are just tantalizing); lithe on entry, its structure immediately apparent, with finely resolved granular tannins that give the wine push and pull and tension that, for us, defines the very finest of such red wines; calmly, comfortably building in presence and in flavor on the palate and all the while holding something more in reserve, oh had we the time or the remaining volume of wine to give this a proper decanting and …

2016 Barolo Brunate Marcarini

2016 Barolo Brunate Marcarini

Marcarini's 2016 Barolo Brunate captures much of the mystique of this La Morra site in its beguiling aromatics. Deep, layered and so expressive, the 2016 has a lot to offer. Time in the glass brings out an exotic quality to the red toned fruit, with spice, menthol and floral overtones that linger. I would not be in a rush to open bottles. Drink 2026‑2036. 2020 Vermentino di Gallura Superiore Jankara

2020 Vermentino di Gallura Superiore Jankara

Vermentino is the workhorse white wine grape variety grown around the span of southeastern France and the northwestern and western coasts of Italy down to Tuscany and to the islands of Corsica and Sardegna. It seems especially well adapted to the coastal vineyards of the Ligurian and Tyrrhenian seas (and, this wine is more clear evidence). Produce of 100% Vermentino fruit hand-harvested from vines planted in 2008 to the primarily crushed granite soils of the microclimate of Vena di San Leonardo in the Alta-Gallura; straw yellow in color with glints of green and ultra-fresh aromas that make this taster want to travel again what with reminiscence of sweet ripe green gold berries kissed with the fresh salt sea air and a hint of the vine leaf itself lending pith (Jankara themselves suggest aromas of Sardinian mandarin and white almond flowers); fresh and vibrant on the tongue, almost as though the wine inherently wants to bubble, with an intensity of flavor and saline minerality that stir the salivary glands long and fresh on the finish.

Produce of Grechetto, Procanico, Pinot Blanc and Viognier from the vineyards of the Marchesi Antinori estate of Castello della Sala in Orvieto, Umbria in central Italy, about an hour's drive southeast from Montalcino, Toscana. Pale straw yellow in color with glints of green in color; aromas suggesting floral, citrus and pesca della vigna, at last it is, of course, mineral and grape; spherical in shape, this is a wine that demonstrates a high pedigree what with its brilliant balance, ripe fruit and restraint, holding shape long on the tongue, this is a tactile wine, both supple and persistent, poised, delicious and fresh, almost irresistible — no, it surely is irresistible. 2019 Orvieto Classico Superiore Terre Vineate Palazzone

2019 Orvieto Classico Superiore Terre Vineate Palazzone

"Unquestionably the number one small estate of Orvieto" according to Stephen Tanzer, Palazzone produces delicious white wines from indigenous grape varietals of Umbria, balancing irresistible fruit aromas and flavors with an oh-so stony backdrop and nerve; produce of 50% Procanico, 30% Grechetto and 20% of Verdello, Drupeggio and Malvasia, vinified in stainless steel to keep things fresh; medium-bodied, supremely-balanced white wine with aromas that speak clearly of cool of the morning harvest fresh grapes and notions of floral honey, beeswax and something like hazelnut and elderflower and, yet again, stone; at once, just ample and round, crisp and dusty, citrusy dry and alive with fresh grapey flavor.

2018 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Vigna del Sorbo Fontodi

2018 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Vigna del Sorbo Fontodi

The 2018 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Vigna del Sorbo is quite possibly the most elegant, refined version of this wine I have ever tasted. It does not offer the immediacy or impact of either the 2015 or 2016, but, instead, impresses with its elegance, persistence and total class. Bright floral and spice notes add perfume to a core of red-toned fruit. The 2018 represents another move towards greater finesse at Fontodi. It spent a year in French oak barrel and a second year in cask. Drink 2026‑2048. Rated 98. - Antonio Galloni, vinous.com September, 2021

2016 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Vigneto Il Poggio Castello di Monsanto

2016 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Vigneto Il Poggio Castello di Monsanto

With vines ranging from 25 to 45 years old, Monsanto’s six-hectare Il Poggio site is divided into three parcels that ripen up to one week apart. They are vinified separately and assessed after ageing to determine what makes it into the final blend. While extroverted on the nose — expressing peppery juniper, tarragon and iron — Il Poggio 2016 is still rigid, firm and linear on the palate. Compact and full, it will need more time to unfold. For now, it hints evocatively at a stone‑walled herb garden. Powerful and savoury with a sappy finish. Drink 2023‑2037. Rated 95. - Michaela Morris, decanter.com March, 2021

2018 Chianti Classico San Giusto a Rentennano

2018 Chianti Classico San Giusto a Rentennano

The 2018 Chianti Classico is a textbook expression from the appellation. This Sangiovese-based wine shows latitude and depth with elegant aromas of wild berry, forest floor, dried blueberry, honey, lavender and rosemary essence. There are hints of chalk or crushed limestone that recall the unique soils of the Gaiole in Chianti growing region. The tannins are elegantly integrated, and the wine offers enough natural freshness to pair with a hearty pappardelle al sugo di cinghiale. Drink 2020‑2030. Rated 93. - Monica Larner, robertparker.com August, 2020
The 2018 Chianti Classico is bright, floral and incredibly refined. In this vintage, the Chianti Classico is a bit more restrained than it can be. Bright red cherry, red plum, mint, cedar, tobacco, game licorice and rose petal all grace this very pretty, mid-weight Chianti Classico. I would cellar the 2018 for at least a few years, as it needs time to come together. Bright acids will help it age gracefully. Drink 2023‑2038. 2016 Brunello di Montalcino Vigna La Casa Caparzo

2016 Brunello di Montalcino Vigna La Casa Caparzo

The 2016 Brunello di Montalcino La Casa takes a little time to collect itself in the glass, pulling you closer as white smoke gives way to crushed stone, then peppery florals, wild strawberry and cedar. The textures are like pure silk, with an elegant display of savory black cherry and spice complicated by salty minerals. This shows amazing density while never feeling heavy, nearly masking its fine-grained tannins until the very end, where hints of orange citrus and dried berries linger. The 2016 La Casa is a beauty with plenty of upside potential. Drink 2026‑2038. Rated 94. - Eric Guido, vinous.com November, 2020

2016 Brunello di Montalcino Altesino

2016 Brunello di Montalcino Altesino

The 2016 Brunello di Montalcino has remarkably consistent integration from the nose to the palate. There are generous aromatics of fresh raspberry, rosemary, lavender and Mediterranean herbs. The palate opens up with ripe and inviting cherry fruit and tea leaf, with supple tannin and freshness on the finish. Its drinkability now should not be confused for a lack of structure, as it is true to the energetic nature of the vintage. Drink 2021‑2036. Rated 95+. - Audrey Frick, jebdunnuck.com March, 2021
Remarkably pretty and poised yet packed full of potential, the 2016 Brunello di Montalcino lifts with grace and elegance, showing dusty roses, wild strawberry, white smoke and hints of wet stone. It’s silky and refined, with cooling acids and minerals giving way to savory red berries and spice. Energy remains high, even as fine tannins create a classically dry and youthful expression, tapering off to violet florals, mocha and a hint of licorice that seems to linger for well over a minute. This is deceptively drinkable today, yet it has all of the necessary components to gain in weight and complexity over a decade or more of cellaring. Drink 2022‑2034. Dark, inward and intense, the 2016 Brunello di Montalcino is a towering effort that will thrill collectors for many years to come. It arrives in waves, first black fruits evolving to red, then sage and earthy minerals, followed by brown spice and, finally, hints of tobacco. Youthfully dense, velvety and in no hurry to unfurl the complex web of fruit, minerals and tannins found within, this instead leaves you guessing at what’s to come. That said, there’s perfect symmetry here, along with the combination of structure and primary intensity to guarantee many years of positive maturation. It’s focused and remarkably pure with a noticeable inner sweetness to the red and hints of blackberry fruit, all cast across a silky, feminine frame. 2016 Brunello di Montalcino Conti Costanti

There’s a sensuality to Costanti's 2016 Brunello di Montalcino. It’s something about the way it draws you in and warms the soul. Its bouquet straddles both the light and dark sides of Sangiovese, rising up with alluring flowery perfumes, cedar dust and crushed cherry, yet then swaying toward rich brown spices and clove. 2016 Brunello di Montalcino Il Poggione

2016 Brunello di Montalcino Il Poggione

I’m not sure how Il Poggione manages to remain one of the largest producers of Brunello, maintaining such a high level of quality and turning out some of the best wines of the vintage year after year - but they do. The 2016 Brunello di Montalcino is yet another stunning example. Depths of mineral-encased black cherries, sage, allspice, licorice, tobacco and crushed violets lift up from the glass. It’s seamlessly silky, even as the palate is peppered with tart red and black berries, nervous acids and savory exotic spices. This shows the density and weight of the vintage in a youthfully monolithic stance, yet with all the necessary components to maintain perfect balance. The 2016 Il Poggione seems to fold in upon itself through the finish, which is dark, mysterious and structured, with only hints of black tea and licorice to tempt the imagination. 2018 Toscana Tignanello Marchesi Antinori

2018 Toscana Tignanello Marchesi Antinori

The 2018 Tignanello is a wine of breathtaking purity. Impossibly silky and persistent, the 2018 is all class, all the way. In many ways, the 2018 reminds me of the 2004 because of its finesse, but it has an extra degree of nuance that reflects important strides that have been made at the estate in the intervening years. Winemaking today is more gentle, while new oak is also less intrusive. The result is a Tignanello that bristles with class. The purity of the flavors alone is mesmerizing. Bright red-toned berries, mocha, spice, cedar, new leather and licorice are some of the many notes that linger on a finish framed by silky, perfectly ripe tannins.
Aging was 16 months in oak, about 50% new. One of the recent developments at Antinori has been a move towards lower toast levels and a preference for longer aging of the raw wood. The blend is a very typical 80% Sangiovese, 15% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Cabernet Franc, with maybe just a touch more Franc than is the norm. At the same time, the Sangiovese is very much front and center. Production hovers around 330,000 bottles. Think about that number. It is more than any Bordeaux First Growth, more than any high-end Napa Valley wine, and equivalent to the production of 60 or so cult Cabernets taken together! Tignanello, in my view, is the single greatest high quality, estate wine made in scale. Drink 2028‑2043. Rated 97. - Antonio Galloni, vinous.com February, 2021

2016 Amarone della Valpolicella Classico Punta di Villa Roberto Mazzi e Figli

2016 Amarone della Valpolicella Classico Punta di Villa Roberto Mazzi e Figli

The wines of Roberto Mazzi e figli speak humbly but forthrightly of their origins, avoiding bombast or over‑ambition, communicating a certain clarity in winegrowing and demonstrating, in our estimation, the essence of vinosità. Their 2016 Amarone della Valpolicella is produce of 65% Corvina, 10% Corvinone, 20% Rondinella and 5% Molinara fruit from vines planted to southwest exposures of calcareous/loam/clay soils near the town of Negrar; lovely just translucent ruby/garnet in color fading only slightly at the edges with a highly charged, alluring and complex slate of aromatics suggestive of summer rainfall on hot stones, dried berries, dried roses, spiced plum and grape pomace (Andrea picked up suggestion of date and butterscotch, as well); velvety on entry and somehow supremely balanced even at a stunning 16.5% alcohol by volume (this is of course no thing at all for a California Zinfandel or Châteauneuf-du-Pape, and not at all for such top‑quality Amarone); potent and concentrated on the palate with fine‑grained velvety tannins delivering flavors a brilliant reprise of the sweeping aromatic slate; warming, sumptuous, rich and vivifying long, long, long on the finish; to accompany slow cooked meat dishes like Osso Buco, stews, flavorful cheeses, quiet contemplation at the end of the evening and the like.

Perbacco is the Italian word for 'golly' (or thereabouts), which we are told was the word that came from the mouth of his mother when Luca Currado Vietti told her that he would declassify what could be Barolo into a less expensive Langhe Nebbiolo … But, to be sure, this is not Barolo light, this is a formidable Langhe Nebbiolo in its own right: medium ruby in color fading to a just slightly tawnier shade at the edges with aromas suggestive of dried cherries (Vietti themselves also note spice and a hint of menthol) and that telltale 'tar and roses' typical of Langhe Nebbiolo (it's all in the soil); full and potent, building in presence and structure on the tongue, with dusty tannins framing rich fruit and a genuine warmth, intensity and length of flavor on the finish. Pici (also known as pinci in Montalcino) enjoys a long, ancient history, dating back to the Etruscans. This regional specialty originates from the town of Siena in Tuscany. If you've been to Siena, Montalcino or Montepulciano, chances are you've enjoyed Pici/Pinci. When cooked it has a radius almost that of a standard pencil (cooking time, at almost 20 minutes, is longer than, say, spaghetti but, it is well worth the wait). Serve it with most any sauce or try something traditionally Tuscan like pici alle briciole (pici with breadcrumbs) or pici all'aglione (pici with tomatoes and garlic). 2018 Rosso di Montepulciano Cantina Chiachierra

2018 Rosso di Montepulciano Cantina Chiachierra

The Chiacchiera winery founded in 2010 by the family of Emanuela Mancianti and is located in the hills of Montepulciano in the locality of Cervognano just southeast of the town of Montepulciano itself. This is an area most suitable for the production of both wine and olive oil. The name "Chiacchiera" was chosen by Emanuela’s father Mario to highlight the fact that it’s a family business. Mario was given this nickname (chiacchierone means chatterbox in Italian) because his guests would be enchanted by his conversation, just as a good wine should enchant those who drink it. Emanuela, on the other hand, personally and meticulously follows every phase of the farming and the vineyards, leaving nothing to chance. Produce of 90% Sangiovese, 10% Ciliegiolo and 10% Canaiolo fruit, the wine is a translucent medium ruby fading just at the edges in color; a touch shy on the nose at first then coming to reveal aromas of crisp red cherry, dried wild herbs, dusty earth and eventually a kind of sangue d'uva quality; vibrant on the tongue, announcing itself clearly with lots of building energy and expression, then eventually mouthfilling with gentle fresh tannins carrying a burst of fresh flavor toward the finish. Questo vino è semplicemente delizioso!

2020 Pinot Grigio Alto Adige Valle Isarco Abbazia di Novacella

2020 Pinot Grigio Alto Adige Valle Isarco Abbazia di Novacella

From 100% Pinot Grigio fruit grown in the Bressanone valley basin at elevations of 600m-900m, well on your way into the Alps from Bolzano and what is one of the loveliest vineyard situations one might imagine (there is even a ski area above the town of Bressanone); pale golden yellow with glints of green in color; brisk, mountain fresh aromatics suggest taut cool of the morning grapes, pine, mint, orchard fruits, hazelnut (knowing where this wine is grown really just stirs the imagination); crisp, vibrant and fresh on the tongue yet ample in body, supple and satisfying with a lovely Alpine intensity of flavor that lasts.

$19.99 the bottle  $203.88 the case

2019 Dogliani Superiore Tecc Poderi Luigi Einaudi

2019 Dogliani Superiore Tecc Poderi Luigi Einaudi

Dogliani is a relatively new DOCG which denotes high quality wines produced from Dolcetto grapes in this cooler, higher elevation growing area in this southern part of Piemonte. Dolcetto translates from Italian as 'little sweet one' — fitting, in this case, as Dogliani is not only quite possibly the origin of the grape, but is certainly also the sweet spot on the planet for its cultivation and transformation into wine. And the Luigi Einaudi bottling of (Vigna) Tecc «pronounced tĕtch» is longtime a favorite of our own and that of our most discerning clientèle: lovely just translucent deep ruby in color with aromas that initially suggest a favorite hard cherry candy from this taster's youth, then graphite (old fashioned grade school-grade pencil shavings), bitter almond, a waft of liquirizia and eventually just bunches and bunches of plump ripe dark grapes; exceptional equilibrium, at once, ample grapey and firm on the palate (Ian noted 'both fruity and savory'; Andrea noted 'a finesse and elegance uncommon in Dolcetto'), and there's something more still, this wine seems to have a certain personality, a kind of nerve, lifeblood, urgency and, at the same time, a sense of comfort in one's own shoes (the views of the Alps from Dogliani would have this taster just giddily comfortable in those Italian shoes); finishing crisp and fresh and vibrant as a brisk sub-Alpine morning. Superbo vino Dolcetto!
