2019 Toscana Tignanello Marchesi Antinori
The 2019 Tignanello is one of the most reserved, understated young wines I can remember tasting here. In so many vintages Tignanello is quite showy, but in 2019 the nervous energy and brightness of Sangiovese takes center stage. That’s intriguing, because the 2019 blend has a bit more Cabernet Sauvignon than normal, a decision made to compensate for some of the lighter qualities in the Sangiovese. With air the 2019 shows gorgeous depth and captivating inner perfume, even if it is clearly still coming together. The 2019 spent about 14 months in oak, with 50% new wood. Things are always in constant evolution at Antinori. This is the first vintage to incorporate some larger 500L barrels, an approach I think will work brilliantly. Drink 2027‑2041. Rated

2016 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Grosso Sanese Podere Il Palazzino
Il Palazzino's Chianti Classico Grosso Sanese is often one of the great wines of Chianti Classico, as it is once again in 2016. Dark, somber and explosive, the 2016 possesses off the charts intensity to match its brooding personality. Black cherry, scorched earth, tobacco, licorice and incense hit the palate. Deep and layered in the glass, the 2016 is superimpressive. What a wine! Il Palazzino is, inexplicably, one of the most under the radar estates in all of Chianti Classico. Alessandro and Andrea Sderci craft, rich, large‑scaled Chianti Classicos that capture all of the natural intensity of Monti in Chianti, where the estate is located. Readers who have not tasted these wines owe it to themselves to do so. Drink 2022‑2031. Rated

2021 Vermentino di Gallura Superiore Jankara
Vermentino is the workhorse white wine grape variety grown around the span of southeastern France and the northwestern and western coasts of Italy down to Tuscany and to the islands of Corsica and Sardegna. It seems especially well adapted to the coastal vineyards of the Ligurian and Tyrrhenian seas (this wine is more clear evidence). Produce of 100% Vermentino hand harvested from vines planted in 2008 to the primarily crushed granite soils of microclimate of Vena di San Leonardo in the Alta-Gallura; vivid yellow/platinum in color with glints of green and ultra fresh aromas that make this taster want to travel again with reminiscence of sweet ripe green gold berries kissed with the fresh salt sea air and a hint of ginestra and the vine leaf itself lending pith (Jankara themselves suggest aromas of Sardinian mandarin and white almond flowers); just ample on entry, then fresh and vibrant on the tongue, almost as though the wine inherently wants to bubble, with an intensity of flavor and saline minerality that stir the salivary glands long and fresh on the finish.

2021 Terre Siciliane Bianco Pomice Tenuta di Castellaro
Produce of 60% Malvasia delle Lipari and 40% Carricante fruit handpicked from bush vines planted to the sandy, volcanic soils of the island of Lipari just north of Etna. Shimmering platinum/yellow in color with aromas suggesting sweet salt sea air, stone fruits and orange/lemon zest (Castellaro themselves suggest almond and the Mediterranean maquis as well); ultra-fresh, almost weightless, poised and delicious on the tongue with lovely contrast of delicacy and salty tangy minerality; makes this taster wish he lived on such an island near the coast and a restaurant specializing in shellfish.

2020 Etna Rosso Tenuta delle Terre Nere
Etna Rosso is, for us, a most wonderful if somewhat recent discovery of some, um, magmatude. And Tenuta delle Terre Nere have emerged a favorite producer of the wine among our discerning clientèle. This Etna Rosso, their opening salvo among a number of delicious bottlings, is produced from a preponderance of Nerello Mascalese along with a dash of Nerello Cappuccio fruit from the young vines of the estate cropped at low yields of around 35 hectolitres per hectare and growing on the hillsides of the famous volcano on the eastern edge of the island of Sicily. Absolutely gorgeous translucent deep ruby in color with a certain vinosità what with almost almost fermentive aromas of crushed ripe berries, rose petals and stone; deceptively supple on entry then building in body with a steady crescendo of substantial ripe tannins, power and volcanic warmth on the tongue. While there has been a good deal of comparison of Etna Rosso to Burgundian Pinot Noir, the aromatic profile is really quite different and the silken-textured opening quickly gives way, builds into somewhat more of a southern powerhouse on the tongue, with fine-grained tannins seemingly carrying bursting flavors right on up that hill, potent and long to the finish. Maybe a comparison to a mythical marriage of Chambolle‑Musigny and Châteauneuf‑du‑Pape would be more apt but, then again, no. Etna Rosso is sui generis. One might say it enters on silken slippers, all carefree, island-hopping light on its feet, but goes out with a firm and forceful resolve, as one might reasonably expect of a wine whose vines' dance partner is the stuff of an active volcano.

2020 Etna Rosso Calderara Sottana Tenuta delle Terre Nere
The soils of Calderara Sottana are easily recognizable, even at a glance. Of all the crus of the Etna DOC they are certainly the stoniest. So much so that in some areas you can’t see the ground from the stones that cover it. Fist-size, light, a mix of black pumice and basalt.
The word itself, Calderara, recalls heat, probably born from the warmth that the black stones retain and transmit back to the earth on cold nights.
The terroir of the Contrada Calderara was originated from lava flows and volcano-clastic deposits related to the effusive and explosive activity of the Elliptic volcano, approximately between 60,000 and 15,000 years ago. Although very young in geological terms, the Elliptic soil is the oldest surface layer where it is possible to plant in the appellation. The reason is simple: millennia of lava flows have buried the oldest soils, leaving, in fact, only small and rare portions of the soil of the Elliptic. On the north side of Etna there are five or six Contradas that have “elliptical terroir”. Three of them, however, are spurious, as the igneous nature of the Elliptic is mixed with alluvial soils of a sedimentary nature due to the overflow of the Alcantara river. On the north side of Etna only three Contradas are “pure” elliptical terroir: Bocca d’Orzo, Calderara and San Lorenzo.
The altitude varies from 600 to 700 meters. The harvest takes place in the second ten days of October. Locally Calderara and its wines enjoy an extraordinary reputation. Our Calderara Sottana is the result of very old vineyards, from 60 to 100 years of age. Of all our crus it is perhaps the most complete: just as a wide-angle lens includes the widest panorama, so our Calderara seems to contain and exhibit the widest spectrum of flavors, aromas and nuances. Distinctly autumnal, spicy, it is aromatic and austere at the same time. It gives a wonderful sensation of fullness on the palate, but ineffably light.
Don Peppino, whose devotion to Calderara drove him to cultivate its vines for 70 years, describes Calderara’s wines well: "creamy", he called them. And he was right. Noble poultry, white meat ragù, pork loin, pork in milk, rabbit in white wine, lamb in the oven. - Marco de Grazia, from

Olio Extra Vergine di Oliva Biologico Tenuta delle Terre Nere
There is no such thing as «the best olive oil». And I would never say that ours is the best. I will, however, say that some may and do care for their trees and olives as much as we do, but none more than us. All our trees are organically raised and kept, the soil around them tilled and tilled again; all expertly pruned every two years. The olives are all hand picked, and every day’s harvest cold pressed every evening. The oil is then left to naturally decant until February/March and is bottled without filtering. Our volcanic soils confer sweetness and finesse to it, and a lovely bouquet. The cold nights inhibit our fruit's worst enemy, the olive fly. The result is an outstanding Extra Virgin Olive Oil. Costs are very high. We lose a little money every year. Someday soon I hope to break even. It doesn’t really matter that much, especially when you see the newly pressed gold/green olive oil gushing free from the press. Some things just have to be done. - Marco de Grazia, paraphrased from

2019 Bolgheri Sassicaia Tenuta San Guido
The latest release from Tenuta San Guido is the 2019 Bolgheri Sassicaia. The bouquet is up front and very expressive from the get-go. It offers a generous display of crunchy, dark cherry that hints at the extra concentration and fruit weight obtained in the 2019 growing season. This vintage will be remembered for the crisp richness of the fruit and its important textural imprint. It also shows fine elegance, bordering on the ethereal, with berry aromas, tarry earth and brushes of balsam herb or grilled rosemary. Sassicaia always shows an almost-glossy finely knit quality to the polished mouthfeel, and I find it again here next to fresh acidity and firm tannins. Mouthfeel in 2019 is the wine's strongest suit. The 2019 is one of the prettiest and most balanced editions of Sassicaia we've seen this past decade, along with the back-to-back duo of 2016 and 2015. The 2019 marries the precision of the 2016 with the rich fruit weight of the 2015. Drink 2025‑2055. Rated
98. Monica Larner,
robertparker.com January, 2022
The 2019 Sassicaia is restrained and also a bit reticent in its first impression. Rose petal, dried herbs, blood orange, mint, sweet pipe tobacco and cinnamon give the 2019 striking aromatic presence. The 2019 is a mid-weight, very classic feeling Sassicaia that is going to need a number of years to open. There's good fruit depth, but the tannins are not as polished as they usually are. That could be a result of lingering stress from frost that year or recent bottling. The 2019 saw 18-20 days on the skins with natural ferments. Malos followed in tank. Aging was 25 months in barrel (1/3rd new), a longer elevage than normal. The 2019 shows beautifully with a few hours of aeration, so I am optimistic for the future. Let's see what happens. 2016 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Vigna Paganelli Tenuta il Poggione
A beguiling mix of camphor and minty herbs, along with crushed stone, blows off slowly to reveal dark depths of black raspberry, licorice, autumnal spice and worn leather as the 2016 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Vigna Paganelli unfolds in the glass. Its textures are unexpectedly soft and velvety-smooth, coupled with depths of intense red fruits that make an appearance just before a mix of brisk acids and tannins creates a more tactile and youthfully clenching expression toward the finale. This leaves the palate aching under the 2016’s structural heft, yet with plenty of primary concentration to balance, as wild savory herbs and earthy mineral tones linger for up to a minute. The potential here is off the charts, but readers will need to be very patient. Perbacco is the Italian word for 'golly' (or thereabouts), which we are told was the word that came from the mouth of his mother when Luca Currado Vietti told her that he would declassify what could be Barolo into a less expensive Langhe Nebbiolo … But, to be sure, this is not Barolo light, this is a formidable Langhe Nebbiolo in its own right: medium ruby in color fading to a just slightly tawnier shade at the edges with aromas suggestive of dried cherries (Vietti themselves also note spice and a hint of menthol) and that telltale 'tar and roses' typical of Langhe Nebbiolo (it's all in the soil); full and potent, building in presence and structure on the tongue, with dusty tannins framing rich fruit and a genuine warmth, intensity and length of flavor on the finish. Aceto Balsamico di Modena 2 Gold Medals Il Classico Giuseppe Giusti
A classic of the Giusti family, Il Classico is a versatile balsamico to be used fresh or heated in cooking preparations. The good density and optimal balance between sweet and sour is characterized by overtones of mature fruits, licorice and black pepper. Aged in oak barrels with the addition of aged balsamic vinegar extracted from centuries old casks. Serving suggestions: vegetables, raw meats, egg, fish and white meat.

2018 Rosso di Montepulciano Cantina Chiachierra
The Chiacchiera winery founded in 2010 by the family of Emanuela Mancianti and is located in the hills of Montepulciano in the locality of Cervognano just southeast of the town of Montepulciano itself. This is an area most suitable for the production of both wine and olive oil. The name "Chiacchiera" was chosen by Emanuela’s father Mario to highlight the fact that it’s a family business. Mario was given this nickname (chiacchierone means chatterbox in Italian) because his guests would be enchanted by his conversation, just as a good wine should enchant those who drink it. Emanuela, on the other hand, personally and meticulously follows every phase of the farming and the vineyards, leaving nothing to chance. Produce of 90% Sangiovese, 10% Ciliegiolo and 10% Canaiolo fruit, the wine is a translucent medium ruby fading just at the edges in color; a touch shy on the nose at first then coming to reveal aromas of crisp red cherry, dried wild herbs, dusty earth and eventually a kind of sangue d'uva quality; vibrant on the tongue, announcing itself clearly with lots of building energy and expression, then eventually mouthfilling with gentle fresh tannins carrying a burst of fresh flavor toward the finish. Questo vino è semplicemente delizioso!

2021 Pinot Grigio Alto Adige Cantina Terlan
The Südtirol Alto Adige enjoys a continental climate protected from the Atlantic and cold northern frontal weather by the Alps and benefits from access to the Mediterranean climate to the south via the Adriatic Sea. Add lots and lots of sunlight and brilliant winegrowing soils ed ecco qua. Brilliant bright yellow-gold in color with ripe, perfumed aromas suggestive of fresh cool orchard fruits like crisp apple, peach, mirabelle plum, then citrus and stone (of course, it's really just the aroma of giddily happy grapes from a wonderful grapegrowing climate and a nice scenery, too); at once caressing and refreshing on the tongue, ample in weight and yet, somehow, still light on its feet; then, mineral, fresh and mouthwatering on the finish.
$19.99 the bottle $203.88 the case
2021 Pinot Grigio Alto Adige Valle Isarco Abbazia di Novacella
From 100% Pinot Grigio fruit grown in the Bressanone valley basin at elevations of 600m-900m, well on your way into the Alps from Bolzano and what is one of the loveliest vineyard situations one might imagine (there is even a ski area above the town of Bressanone); pale golden yellow with glints of green in color; brisk, mountain fresh aromatics suggest taut cool of the morning grapes, pine, mint, orchard fruits, hazelnut (knowing where this wine is grown really just stirs the imagination); crisp, vibrant and fresh on the tongue yet ample in body, supple and satisfying with a lovely Alpine intensity of flavor that lasts.
$22.50 the bottle $229.56 the case
2019 Dogliani Superiore Tecc Poderi Luigi Einaudi
Dogliani is a relatively new DOCG which denotes high quality wines produced from Dolcetto grapes in this cooler, higher elevation growing area in this southern part of Piemonte. Dolcetto translates from Italian as 'little sweet one' — fitting, in this case, as Dogliani is not only quite possibly the origin of the grape, but is certainly also the sweet spot on the planet for its cultivation and transformation into wine. And the Luigi Einaudi bottling of (Vigna) Tecc «pronounced tĕtch» is longtime a favorite of our own and that of our most discerning clientèle: lovely just translucent deep ruby in color with aromas that initially suggest a favorite hard cherry candy from this taster's youth, then graphite (old fashioned grade school-grade pencil shavings), bitter almond, a waft of liquirizia and eventually just bunches and bunches of plump ripe dark grapes; exceptional equilibrium, at once, ample grapey and firm on the palate (Ian noted 'both fruity and savory'; Andrea noted 'a finesse and elegance uncommon in Dolcetto'), and there's something more still, this wine seems to have a certain personality, a kind of nerve, lifeblood, urgency and, at the same time, a sense of comfort in one's own shoes (the views of the Alps from Dogliani would have this taster just giddily comfortable in those Italian shoes); finishing crisp and fresh and vibrant as a brisk sub-Alpine morning. Superbo vino Dolcetto!
