2021 Valtellina Superiore Valgella Vigneto Carterìa Riserva Sandro Fay

Valgella is the name of one of the five sub‑zones of the Valtellina Superiore denomination of origin. It stretches over 137 hectares in the commune of Teglio. The name comes from Valgel, a word in the local dialect describing the small streams that characterize the area. The Carterìa vineyard extends over 3 hectares in the Valgella subzone at 500 meters above sea level; the name derives from a small hamlet in the municipality of Teglio, where the Fay family has always owned their plots. In Carterìa, the company began consolidation and replanting work, which has continued in the years since. Produce of 100% Nebbiolo (known locally as Chiavennasca) planted to sandy/silty soils deriving from crumbled granite here just directly to the south of the Alps. Pure ruby in color with pristine alpine Nebbiolo aromatics (Chris noted a panoply of alpine fields' growth: chamomile, dried flowers, sweet grasses), then a certain sanguinity, taut wild berries, dried herb, a hint of liquirizia (Darcie noted anise or cerfoglio and cocoa); light and airy on entry, then vivid on the tongue, demonstrating that firm Nebbiolo resolve with not quite searing but crunchy tannins and mouthwatering acidity, oh this is good, with lasting flavors and a compelling warmth that one can feel in one's chest.
