2021 Valtellina Superiore Valgella Vigneto Carterìa Riserva Sandro Fay

Valgella is the name of one of the five sub‑zones of the Valtellina Superiore denomination of origin. It stretches over 137 hectares in the commune of Teglio. The name comes from Valgel, a word in the local dialect describing the small streams that characterize the area. The Carterìa vineyard extends over 3 hectares in the Valgella subzone at 500 meters above sea level; the name derives from a small hamlet in the municipality of Teglio, where the Fay family has always owned their plots. In Carterìa, the company began consolidation and replanting work, which has continued in the years since. Produce of 100% Nebbiolo (known locally as Chiavennasca) planted to sandy/silty soils deriving from crumbled granite here just directly to the south of the Alps. Pure ruby in color with pristine alpine Nebbiolo aromatics (Chris noted a panoply of alpine fields' growth: chamomile, dried flowers, sweet grasses), then a certain sanguinity, taut wild berries, dried herb, a hint of liquirizia (Darcie noted anise or cerfoglio and cocoa); light and airy on entry, then vivid on the tongue, demonstrating that firm Nebbiolo resolve with not quite searing but crunchy tannins and mouthwatering acidity, oh this is good, with lasting flavors and a compelling warmth that one can feel in one's chest. We'll say it again, oh this is good.

2021 Valtellina Superiore Inferno Nino Negri

The vineyards face south at altitudes of between 350 and 550 metres above sea level. The soils are shallow, sandy loam with low fertility (perfect, if difficult, for winegrowing) contained by dry-stone wall terraces. This area bears a name that immediately evokes the main character of the terroir, that is heat. Rocky outcrops increase temperatures by reflecting the sun's rays during the day and releasing heat at night. The steep slope allows the sun's rays to strike the ground from a more perpendicular angle, increasing the solar radiation. A good amount of soil allows the Nebbiolo to mature in terms of sugar content, but above all in terms of polyphenols. Delicate ruby at the core in color fading to garnet/tawny hues at the edges with soil‑inflected aromas suggesting pre‑alpine stone and macerating berries (Nino Negri themselves suggest cherry, ripe plum, cinnamon and clove); supple on entry, with a nice surge of warmth and at the same time a certain high‑elevation Nebbiolo delicacy at play; quite apart from its name, this is quite simply a most elegant, almost ethereal rendering of Nebbiolo.

2024 Rosso di Valtellina Olé! Dirupi

Delicate translucent ruby at the core to a fiery tawny at the edges with delicate Alpine‑inspired aromatics of dried rose petals, wildflowers, tarry dried berries and baking spices; slips lightly and silken onto the tongue, then demonstrates an impactful burst of spice and tarry berry flavor and zing of taut berryish acidity, building in body and tannic grip and warmth, further demonstrating all the delicious possibilities of Nebbiolo grown in these fresh high‑elevation vineyards.

2023 Pinot Nero dell'Oltrepò Pavese Costa del Nero Conte Vistarino

From 100% Pinot Noir fruit grown at elevation in the Oltrepò Pavese, Lombardia in northern Italia not far from Milano. To be sure, Pinot Nero is no stranger to northern Italy. And given the climate change induced difficulties with Pinot Noir in Burgundy, the more sources for viable Pinot from anywhere close to the quality we are able to get from Burgundy, the merrier. Medium ruby to garnet at the edges in color with subtle aromas that quietly sing ripe happy berries, the grape jujubes of this wine taster's youth, a hint of petrichor; supple and silky onto the tongue, holding its shape well; demonstrating a delicious freshness and length of flavor.
