From a very small single vineyard of clay and limestone soils located on a steep slope above La Toppe au Vert on a hump of the hill of Corton and shared between Domaine Chanson and the Hospices de Beaune. Brilliant yellow/gold in color with subtle toast and nostril titillating suggestion of sweet citrus (it's lemon) on cool limestone with notions of fresh delicate green herb like chervil, fennel or rain-moistened marjoram (a bit more air strangely revealed a touch of reduction in the wine); spherical in shape and building on the palate, with a through-line of beautiful ripe fleshy orchard fruits and the sweet spice of (expensive) vanillin oak lending a creaminess of texture, all the while très minérale, holding its shape and crystalline balance with nuance of orange peel and wine-moistened limestone on the ultra-long, warming, enveloping finish; simply put, this is a profound white Burgundy wine. One among our handful of favorite white Burgundies over the last decade or so of vintages. Here too there is enough wood and menthol influence to merit pointing out on the more floral and spicier aromas of pure red berry, plum and anise. There is fine richness to the relatively refined yet generously proportioned flavors that exude evident minerality on the youthfully austere finale. Though concentrated, with cherry, currant and boysenberry flavors, this red is also sleek and vibrant, with bright acidity and refined tannins, showing excellent balance and length.
